Dairy Cow Salt Requirements

Lactating cows: The requirement for milking cows can be met by 0.46% of the dry matter intake of the diet or 1% of the compound feed (or concentrate supplement). Normal lactating cows feed 15 grams of salt a day; daily milk production of more than 20 kilograms is sufficient to feed 30 grams of salt.

Non-milk cows: According to 0.25-0.3% of dietary dry matter intake, it can meet the needs.

The maximum tolerated level of salt for lactating cows is 4% of dry matter in the diet; the maximum tolerable level for growing cows is 9%, and it has been demonstrated that high levels of salt increase the swelling of the breast and is not conducive to feeding and management.
