City University of Hong Kong develops new cancer treatment technology costs down 99%

According to Hong Kong's Ta Kung Pao, the research team of the Department of Biomedical Science of the City University of Hong Kong has developed a new technology to help treat various cancers. As a carrier of transportation cancer treatment drugs, the effect is 80%, and the cost and treatment cost is only 1% of the old technology. The research team has demonstrated in mice that the technology does not produce any side effects.

According to reports, Li Yueming, an assistant professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences at CityU, said that extracellular vesicles can transport proteins and other large molecules through the membrane between cells, which help cells communicate with each other, and is therefore suitable for use as a drug carrier.

In the past, the delivery of drugs to extracellular vesicles of cancer cells required strict purification techniques, which were time-consuming and low-yielding, requiring billions of cells to extract enough extracellular vesicles. Ultracentrifugation is now used to purify red blood cells, and only 50 ml of red blood cells produce a thick extracellular vesicle.

Shi Jiahai, an assistant professor at the Department of Biology, City University, said that the new technology uses both intravascular and intramuscular injections to inject extracellular vesicles together with drugs for cancer treatment into the body and transport them to the affected area through blood to reach 80% of cancer cells. .

This technology can antagonize the resistance to cancer caused by mutations, and can also treat non-cancer diseases such as leukemia and Mediterranean anemia. In the past, when stem cells were used to make extracellular vesicles, they carried oncogenes, which may cause further expansion of the tumor, but now they are made of red blood cells, which is safe because red blood cells do not carry any genetic material.

Shi Jiahai also pointed out that the technology is expected to be used for clinical use after 5 years. The cost of one injection is 3,000 Hong Kong dollars, which is 1% of the old method. The team is now further studying the characteristics and transformation of extracellular vesicles in red blood cells to improve gene therapy for the delivery of cancer drugs.
