Morphological Characteristics: This is a deciduous shrub known for its elegant appearance. The old branches are gray-brown, while the new shoots are green and have a four-angled structure. Leaves are opposite, with 3 leaflets or sometimes simple leaves. The flowers appear before the leaves, featuring bright yellow petals with five lobes. They are fragrant and bloom from February to April. The spring flowers greet the season with modest beauty rather than showy display. Their small, yellow blossoms resemble trumpet-shaped flowers, clustered along the green branches. When viewed together, they look like golden inlays on jade, symbolizing the arrival of spring. For this reason, it's also called the "Early Spring Messenger."

Cultivation Management:

Native to Yunnan, China, this plant thrives in warm, humid conditions with plenty of sunlight. It is sensitive to cold and waterlogging, but can tolerate some shade. It prefers well-drained, fertile, acidic sandy soil.

Propagation is mainly done through cuttings, though layering and other methods can also be used. Cuttings should be taken in spring, summer, or autumn. Woody branches about 12–15 cm long are inserted into sandy soil and kept moist. Rooting typically takes around 15 days. For layering, long twigs are buried shallowly in sandy soil without wounding. Roots develop after 40–50 days, and the new plants can be transplanted the following spring. When buds begin to sprout in spring, ramets can be separated. During transplanting, some ground-level branches may be pruned, and fresh soil should be added. Throughout the growing season, ensure the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize 2–3 times before and after flowering. In autumn and winter, pruning helps maintain a healthy shape and encourages new blooms. Common pests include leaf spot disease and dead leaf disease, which can be treated with 1500 times diluted 50% Tuzet WP. Aphids and cockroaches can be controlled by spraying 50% phoxim EC at a 1000-fold dilution.

The slender, drooping branches make this plant ideal for planting on embankments, terraces, and garden edges. It’s especially suitable for use in hotels, building facades, and as a potted plant, offering a charming and elegant touch to any space.
