The world's first magnetically controlled capsule robot helps to make colonoscopy easily

Due to changes in modern people's eating habits, diseases such as colon cancer and colon polyps have received widespread attention. Colonoscopy has become the standard diagnostic method for the diagnosis of colon and other intestinal diseases. A recent study published in Digestive Disease Week 2017 showed us a new type of colonoscopy – a magnetically controlled capsule robot.

The traditional method of colonoscopy is colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is an invasive method of examination. It is an electronic endoscope with an electronic camera at the end. It is about 140cm in length and can be bent. It enters the body from the patient's anus and enters the rectum and colon to the cecum. Although colonoscopy can effectively observe abnormalities of the intestinal mucosa, such as cancer, erosion, bleeding and polyps, but as an invasive examination, there are certain discomforts and complications, and there is a strict diet in the early stage of the examination. And emptying requirements, therefore, many patients will be afraid of this kind of examination. Due to this fear of the patient, some large intestine lesions and even tumors are difficult to diagnose early, which delays the optimal treatment opportunity. Many postoperative patients and suspected intestinal perforation and peritonitis are difficult to use this invasive method, which limits the application of traditional colonoscopy in postoperative follow-up.

Colonoscopy is very important for early diagnosis of colorectal cancer and intestinal polyps, and many middle-aged people or individuals with family and family history should have regular colonoscopy every year. So how to make this check It becomes more acceptable and is also important for health monitoring and post-operative tracking.

An 18mm-sized magnetically controlled capsule colonoscope was developed from Vanderbilt University and the University of Leeds. Capsule robots can enter the intestines in a milder manner such as swallowing, and they do not produce invasive side effects like traditional colonoscopy. Externally, the researchers manipulated the magnetrons in the body with external magnets. The magnetically controlled capsule robot has been successfully tested in pigs. By external manipulation, the robot can advance and flip in the intestines and can be bent backwards so that the camera can observe the entire intestinal wall in reverse.
