American ophthalmology company LensGen treats cataracts and presbyopia with intraocular lenses
According to the latest document released this week by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), it was learned that the artificial crystal developer LensGen raised a new round of equity financing of $7.3 million from 13 anonymous investors. It is mainly used to develop an adaptive intraocular lens (AIOL) designed specifically for patients with presbyopia and cataract. In fact, as early as May, LensGen has completed a $21 million Series A financing, led by the corporate venture capital department of HOYA Group, and other related medical partners. So far, LensGen's total financing amount has reached $2,375 (not included in this anonymous investment of $7.3 million). LensGen Historical Financing Data LensGen, an ophthalmic medical device company based in California, USA, was founded in 2011 to focus on restoring young vision to millions of cataract and presbyopic patients. With its innovative Adaptive Intraocular Lens (AIOL), Juvene, the company aims to treat vision correction errors and provide unique lenses for patients affected by presbyopia and cataracts. LensGen says their intraocular lenses mimic the natural adjustment process of the human eye to change shape and focus, and can be implanted into the intraocular lens using current surgical techniques. About presbyopia and cataract When we reached the age of 40, we began to lose the ability to focus on near objects, the medical term for which is called presbyopia. Presbyopia is the loss of accommodation function that occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes less elastic due to aging. The adjustment of the human eye is similar to the autofocus function on the camera, except that the human eye is contracted by tiny muscles in the eye to make the natural lens thin or thicker to achieve focus. According to industry estimates, nearly 2 billion people worldwide suffer from presbyopia, and in the United States, the potential market for presbyopia treatment may exceed $5 billion. A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in a normal transparent lens of the eye. Most cataracts usually develop in people over the age of 55, and when cataracts progress to affect a person's ability to perform normal daily work, surgery is often required to replace the lens. Cataract surgery involves removal of the opaque lens and replacement with the intraocular lens. It is estimated that 30 million cataract surgeries will be performed globally by 2020. Cataract surgeons have been waiting for an adaptive intraocular lens technique that is fully compatible with small incision cataract surgery to provide adequate accommodation for presbyopic patients. LensGen's adaptive intraocular lens is perhaps the perfect solution?
