The Money Tree, also known as Pachira aquatica, is a small evergreen tree belonging to the Kapokaceae family. It features palmate leaves with 7 to 11 oblong or obovate leaflets, giving it a lush and attractive appearance. The trunk has a distinctive hammer-shaped structure, making it a unique ornamental plant. This species thrives in warm, humid, and well-ventilated environments. It can tolerate some shade and prefers loose, fertile, and well-draining soil for optimal growth.
Propagation of the Money Tree can be done through seeds or cuttings. Seeds should be sown immediately after harvesting, while cuttings are best taken between May and June. When using cuttings, select healthy buds and ensure they are kept in a shaded, moist environment. Rooting typically occurs within about 30 days.
For potted Pachira plants, repotting every 1 to 2 years is recommended. In spring, when the soil is released, trim any yellow or weak branches to encourage new growth. Watering should follow the "see wet, see dry" principle. During spring and autumn, adjust watering frequency based on weather conditions—water once a day when dry. If temperatures exceed 35°C, water at least twice daily. Fertilize every month during the growing season to support healthy development.
When new leaves appear, misting the foliage helps maintain high humidity, which is essential for the plant's growth. From June to September, provide partial shade to maintain 60–70% light transmittance or place the plant in a location with bright, indirect light. In winter, bring the plant indoors and keep the temperature above 5°C, ideally around 10°C. Water every 5–7 days, and ensure it receives adequate light.
During the growing season, poor ventilation can lead to pests such as red spider mites and scale insects. Regularly inspect the plant and take immediate action if any infestation is detected, such as manually removing pests or applying an appropriate pesticide. With proper care, the Money Tree can thrive and add beauty to both indoor and outdoor spaces.
