New injectable foam repairs bones and helps bone regeneration

Release date: 2015-12-31

French researchers have developed a special injectable foam that can help repair bone damage caused by degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis. Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) has been used for bone repair throughout the years, but this new approach is more suitable for older people and people with weak bones.
This new type of CPC mixture is macroporous rather than microporous. Large holes help to strengthen mature bones in less time. Because this treatment can be done with a syringe, it only gives the patient minimal discomfort and does not cause discomfort and danger from large surgery.
Pierre Weiss, head of the research project, said: "Our method is simple, and it works well in terms of mechanical properties and macroporous structure. This is a great biomaterial against osteoporosis, we Animal experiments are needed to confirm our thoughts."
The magical ingredient in the material is actually a hydrogel that acts as a blowing agent to create bubbles in the original mixture. When the hydrogel is rapidly mixed with the CPC, foam will be produced which is particularly useful for repairing soft, elastic tissues.
Based on experiments in rabbits, this foam does help new bone formation without any side effects. But still need a lot of experimentation before using it on humans.
The first time CPC used to repair bones dates back to 1920. This new hydrogel formulation makes it possible to repair bones damaged by disease.
The study was published in the journal Acta Biomaterialia.
