Cultivation of kelp and other economic algae

Kelp, seaweed, wakame, agaric, eucheuma, leeks, etc. are economic algae that people in eastern countries like China, Japan, and North Korea like to eat.

Kelp is native to cold seas in Japan and North Korea. Before liberation, Chinese edible kelp was mainly imported from Japan and North Korea. After the liberation, Chinese marine biologists and aquaculture workers studied and solved key technologies such as manual control of seawater temperature seedlings through scientific experiments. During the past 20 years, Chinese kelp farming has developed into a large-scale industry. The annual output of kelp in China is 500,000 tons (fresh produce), accounting for about half of the world's seaweed production, ranking first in the world.

Originally, kelp breeding was based on spore germination to produce seaweed seedlings. The spores germinate very strictly for seawater temperature. When seawater temperature is higher than a certain value, the spores of seaweeds do not germinate or the germination rate is extremely low. Water temperature conditions in China's sea areas are not conducive to spore germination. Although there are a number of kelp seedlings brought into China by ships from Japan and North Korea's northern kelp to bring in some seaweed seedlings to grow in sea areas such as Dalian Port in China, they have never been able to form a large-scale wild kelp community. The problem is also very simple. As long as the temperature of seawater in the nursery room is manually controlled, the spores of seaweed can germinate into kelp seedlings in the nursery room. The kelp seedlings were caught in the hemp rope joints, and then many such hemp ropes with several seaweed seedlings were tied to the raft on the kelp farm. This led to the formation of kelp farms with thousands of strains of kelp. Of course, like a crop, from the "transplantation" (a kelp seedling rope) to the harvest, it is also necessary to carry out a busy "field management", including fertilization, seedling inversion (exchange of the depth of kelp seedlings), removal of seedling attachments, and the like. After the hard work of the kelp aquaculture workers, only l-2cm long seedlings emerged from the nursery, and they grew into a seaboard with a length of nearly 10 meters in the autumn. What is even more gratifying is that the seaweed seedlings artificially controlled by water temperature have been planted from the northern coast of China to the coastal areas of Fujian Province in the south and have finally made China the world’s top kelp aquaculture country.
