Fish feed can be produced using methods similar to those used for fishmeal, soybean meal, and other protein sources. However, the cost of fish feed has been rising steadily, leading to shrinking profits for fish farmers and increasing risks related to disease and market fluctuations. As a result, finding an affordable and efficient feed solution has become a critical need, especially for small and medium-sized fish farmers.
One promising approach is the use of chicken manure as a raw material for producing pelleted fish feed. This not only offers a low-cost alternative but also helps create a mutually beneficial system between poultry and fish farming, establishing a sustainable ecological cycle. While this isn't a complete solution on its own, it presents a viable option that can significantly reduce feeding costs.
Dried chicken manure contains approximately 40% protein, making it a valuable feed source for fish. It can also serve as an ideal ingredient in the production of fish pellet feed. However, raw chicken manure often contains parasite eggs and harmful bacteria, which makes it unsuitable for direct feeding. Therefore, it must undergo fermentation or proper treatment before being used in fish feed.
The process involves mixing dry chicken manure (about 50%) with ingredients such as corn flour, soybean meal, rapeseed cake, and bran. After thorough blending, the mixture is processed into pellets. The cost of producing 100 kg of this chicken manure-based feed is around RMB 20, which is significantly lower than commercial alternatives. Despite the low cost, the feeding performance and weight gain are comparable to traditional feeds, making it a practical and economical choice for farmers looking to improve sustainability and profitability.
