There are three misunderstandings in soil testing and formula fertilization

At present, soil testing and formula fertilization are being actively promoted nationwide. However, some areas still have misconceptions about how to understand and implement this important work. Some people mistakenly believe that it is a simple technical task—just testing the soil and preparing a large number of fertilizer formulas. They think that having instruments and laboratories is enough, which has seriously affected the scientific nature of the technology and led farmers astray. First, there's a misunderstanding in perception. Experts emphasize that soil testing and formula fertilization is not just a short-term project or a one-time initiative. It is a long-term, fundamental task that directly impacts stable grain production, increased farmer income, and environmental improvement. This is a critical, ongoing effort that requires sustained attention and commitment. Soil testing and formula fertilization is not merely a technical process. It requires the active participation of all sectors of society, each taking responsibility and working together to ensure its success. The agricultural technology extension system should lead the soil testing, formulation, and guidance on fertilization, establishing a strong technical platform. Soil testing and fertilization trial stations, fertilizer manufacturers, and sellers must ensure the production and supply of tailored fertilizers, building efficient production and distribution mechanisms. Research and educational institutions should focus on solving key technical challenges, continuously improving soil testing and fertilization techniques. Second, there's a misunderstanding about the relationship between soil testing and field trials. Experts point out that soil testing isn't just about lab analysis—it's not simply "picking medicine" based on a prescription. Field trials for different crops are the most direct and effective way to understand the impact of fertilization, crop growth, and nutrient absorption. These trials form the foundation for soil testing and formula fertilization, serving as the primary basis for developing crop-specific fertilization plans. They are essential for creating crop-specific fertilization zones and must be prioritized. Additionally, soil testing involves selecting representative plots within a certain area to determine nutrient levels and develop fertilization recommendations. It’s neither feasible nor necessary to test every single plot individually. Third, there's a misunderstanding regarding rapid soil nutrient testing. According to experts, soil test results are relative values and require matching field trials to establish an effective fertility recommendation system. Currently, most rapid soil testers lack a comprehensive fertilization indicator system. When only one or two samples are tested, the device may claim "fast," but when a larger batch is tested (more than three samples), the results often align with traditional lab methods, which are slower but more accurate. Therefore, in large-scale soil testing and formula fertilization efforts, conventional soil testing remains the most reliable and effective method. The use of rapid soil testing devices should be approached with caution and not widely distributed.
