In a major breakthrough in medical technology, Japan has developed an advanced robotic system that closely mimics human flexibility. This innovation is expected to become a household assistant by 2015, providing support for patients and the elderly in daily care tasks.
The robot, known as "TWENDY-ONE," was created by researchers at Waseda University. Its most remarkable feature is its highly dexterous hands, capable of performing delicate actions such as picking up a cup, inserting a straw, pouring tea, or retrieving items from a refrigerator. Even tasks like squeezing ketchup are within its capabilities. According to the research team, the robot's flexible joints and soft touch ensure safety when interacting with humans, eliminating the risk of accidental injury. One of the project’s lead researchers stated, “If a human hand can do it, so can this robot. Its touch is nearly indistinguishable from that of a human.â€
Looking ahead, TWENDY-ONE is designed to be integrated into homes and hospitals, helping individuals with mobility and daily living activities. It aims to provide companionship and assistance to those in need, significantly improving quality of life for the aging population. While the exact price has not been finalized, it is estimated to range between 2 million and 30 million yen.
As the global population continues to age, innovations like TWENDY-ONE represent a promising step toward more efficient and compassionate healthcare solutions. The development marks a key milestone in the field of robotics and medical assistance.
