At present, most pig farming operations use two main feeding methods. The first is the "hanging shelf" approach. In the early stages, farmers rely heavily on green and roughage feeds, while using only a small amount of finely ground feed. Once the pigs reach 50–60 kilograms, high-energy concentrates are introduced to accelerate growth. Although this method makes good use of forages, it lacks sufficient protein and minerals needed during the growing phase, which leads to a feeding period lasting over a year. This results in wasted feed and inefficient resource use.
The second method is the "one-stop" system, where pigs are fed the same diet from weaning to slaughter. This reduces the overall feeding time and lowers feed consumption. However, it fails to make full use of the abundant green and roughage available in rural areas, leading to lower profitability.
To address these issues, a new method called "pour-feeding" has been developed. This technique takes into account the growth patterns of pigs and aims to optimize both feed efficiency and economic returns. During the early growth phase, when pigs are under 50–60 kg, the diet is rich in energy and protein, with a focus on high-quality concentrates, along with necessary additives and a small portion of green or roughage feeds. As the pigs grow into the mid-stage, the concentrate level is gradually reduced, while the proportion of green feed and roughage is increased. The recommended ratio at this stage is 60% concentrate, 25% green feed, and 15% roughage.
This approach not only shortens the overall feeding cycle but also effectively utilizes locally available green and roughage resources. By reducing reliance on expensive concentrates, farmers can significantly improve their economic returns while maintaining healthy pig growth. Overall, "pour-feeding" represents a more sustainable and efficient way to raise pigs, combining traditional feed sources with modern nutritional strategies.
