Yesterday, Li Zhenzhong, deputy inspector of the Department of Market Order of the Ministry of Commerce, said on the spot that since last year, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Finance have piloted in 20 cities and used modern information technology to solve the problem of traceability of meat and vegetables. At the end of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, cities with a population of more than one million in urban areas will be fully covered. By then, all pigs and vegetables in more than 600 large and medium-sized cities across the country will be traced back online. The public can trace the problem to the responsible person. For example, after the establishment of the traceability system, Li Zhenzhong said that if ordinary people buy meat in the mall, according to the information on the credentials or the small ticket, they can find every link in the circulation. Once the product has quality problems, it can use the records to prosecute the responsibility. Li Zhenzhong said that at present, the business department is harmonizing standards from the collection of indicators, coding rules, transmission formats, etc., to achieve effective cross-regional trace information connection.

Li Zhenzhong disclosed that recently the Ministry of Commerce intends to upgrade some of the recommended standards concerning meat quality and safety to mandatory national standards. In addition, a five-year development plan for pig slaughtering industry will be issued to regulate pig breeding and slaughter.

According to statistics, last year China produced 50.712 million tons of pork, ranking first in the world. However, the export volume was extremely low and most of the pork was consumed domestically.
