Grasshopper habits

Grasshoppers, often referred to as "fly fleas," are typically seen as pests. However, in some areas like Qiu County, Hebei Province, local farmers have turned this perception upside down. For instance, the Gao Yunlong family successfully transitioned from being ordinary farmers to wealthy individuals by breeding and selling grasshoppers. Their annual income exceeded 10,000 yuan, and they even helped surrounding farmers develop leech farming, creating a new source of income for the community. Grasshoppers thrive under specific environmental conditions. The ideal temperature range for their development is between 25°C and 32°C, with a relative humidity of 85% to 92%. The soil moisture content should be maintained at 15% to 18%. If the temperature drops below 14°C or rises above 40°C, grasshoppers will stop growing and eventually die. When the temperature reaches 28°C to 30°C, the eggs begin to hatch. To prepare the breeding environment, farmers mix non-toxic soil with sawdust powder in a ratio of 1:2, ensuring that the water content is between 20% and 30%. A layer of 3 to 5 cm of this mixture is placed in the container, followed by the grasshopper eggs. These eggs are then covered with about 1 cm of the mixed soil. The container is then sealed with a plastic film and checked every half day. Once the young grasshoppers emerge, they are carefully brushed onto the food in the shed using a soft brush. It usually takes 10 to 15 days for the hatching process to complete. Newly hatched grasshoppers feed on fresh wheat seedlings, corn seedlings, and weeds—mainly monocotyledonous plants—but their appetite is very small. As they grow, between 1 to 3 years old, they need proper care. From the time they emerge until reaching adulthood, it takes about 27 to 35 days. During this period, they molt every 5 to 7 days, a total of five times. Once grasshoppers reach maturity, they begin mating and laying eggs. Each grasshopper can lay around 70 to 100 eggs. To ensure successful reproduction, grasshoppers tend to live in groups and migrate. Therefore, before spawning, it's important to gently disturb them to encourage migration, which helps improve both the quantity and quality of the eggs. Eggs laid before winter should be protected by covering them with materials like wheat bran and weeds to provide insulation and moisture, preventing them from freezing. Adult grasshoppers should be sold promptly if they are not intended for breeding, ensuring a steady flow of income throughout the year. This method has proven to be a sustainable and profitable way for many families to increase their livelihoods.
