Binhai County in Jiangsu Province has recently introduced the American frog farming technology in paddy fields, implemented in townships such as Canna, Zhenghong, Caiqiao, and Wuyi. This innovative approach has led to a successful dual harvest of rice and frogs, significantly boosting farmers' income. On average, each mu of paddy field can reduce pesticide costs by nearly 100 yuan, while generating an additional 1,000 yuan in revenue from raising beautiful frogs.
The paddy fields selected for this method need to have gentle topography, a safe water source, good water quality, and efficient drainage and irrigation systems. In fact, most rice fields suitable for fish farming can also be used for raising American frogs, making this technique both versatile and cost-effective.
One key facility is the reinforcement and widening of the field ridges. A trench with a depth and width of 60 centimeters is dug, and the base must be deepened to 40 centimeters to ensure stability. Another important step is setting up an anti-escape fence made of polyethylene mesh, which is not only breathable and water-permeable but also resistant to wind and rain damage.
Frog stocking usually takes place about 10 days after transplanting. Farmers typically stock 1,500 to 2,000 young frogs per acre, each weighing between 40 to 50 grams. To prevent larger frogs from eating smaller ones, it's important to maintain a uniform size during stocking. Additionally, American frog crickets should not be introduced, as they may become prey for natural predators like snakes or other pests present in the paddy fields.
After the frogs are stocked, proper feeding and management are crucial. They can be fed fresh fish, shrimp, chopped pig lungs, or specially formulated feed. It’s essential to follow a regular, measured, and fixed feeding schedule. The food can be scattered on the surface of the ditches or placed in a bamboo-made feeding station with a mesh sheet. Duckweed can also be added to the ditches as a natural food source for the frogs. Regular visits to the fields help detect any issues early and ensure healthy growth.
In terms of fertilization, the focus should be on base fertilizers with minimal top-dressing. Since rice-frog systems have fewer pests and diseases, pesticides are rarely needed. If necessary, high-efficiency, low-toxicity options like leafhopper insecticides should be used. Before applying any chemicals, the water level should be maintained above 10 cm. Powdered pesticides are best applied in the morning, while liquid formulations should be sprayed after the dew has dried. Avoid spraying on rainy days, and take care to minimize the amount of pesticide that enters the water.
