Onion and garlic seed disinfection

Onion and garlic vegetable seeds are highly susceptible to absorbing various pathogens during storage, which can lead to diseases in the seedlings. To ensure healthy growth and strong seedlings, it's essential for farmers to properly disinfect the seeds before sowing. By following the recommended methods, they can effectively eliminate harmful pathogens and improve the overall quality of their crops.

To disinfect onion seeds, soak them in a solution of 40% formalin diluted at a ratio of 300:1 for approximately 3 hours. After soaking, rinse the seeds thoroughly with clean water and allow them to dry before planting. This method is particularly effective in killing fungal spores and viruses that may be present on the seed surface.

For garlic bulbs, a similar but slightly different approach is recommended. Soak the bulbs in warm water at a temperature between 40°C and 50°C for about 90 minutes. Then transfer them to boiling water for a short period, followed by cooling and drying. This process helps to eliminate diseases such as anthracnose and black spot virus, which are commonly found on garlic bulbs.

By taking these precautions, farmers can significantly reduce the risk of disease transmission and promote healthier, more vigorous plant growth. Proper seed and bulb treatment not only improves crop yield but also enhances the long-term sustainability of farming practices.
