Pruning plays a vital role in the field management of ramie. It helps improve plant structure, balance vegetative and reproductive growth, enhance pollination conditions, and promote earlier maturity. Applying proper pruning techniques and selecting the right pruning pattern are effective strategies for increasing castor yield.
The first pruning should take place when the plants have 6–7 true leaves, typically in mid-June. At this stage, the buds should be removed before they start to emerge—this process is also known as topping. The second pruning occurs around mid-July, where five main branches are selected to remain. The remaining branches are cut back within the first ten days, and secondary branches on the five primary ones are pruned, leaving 1–2 secondary branches depending on the seedling’s strength and fertility. Little or no tertiary branches should be left behind.
To ensure effective pruning, several key points should be considered. First, pruning methods should not be applied rigidly; instead, they should be adjusted based on the variety, soil quality, planting density, and skill level of the workers. The number of branches to be retained should be decided beforehand and executed promptly. Second, timing is crucial—pruning too late can significantly reduce yield. The first topping and the final cut are especially important. Pruning should be done on sunny afternoons, as this helps the wounds heal faster. Third, do not leave any buds unattended. Before picking a bud, the tip must be wiped off immediately once it starts to appear or just as it begins to emerge. Fourth, once a pruning model is set, it should be adapted flexibly. Depending on local climate, some plants may develop multiple levels of branches, and these should be carefully managed. Lastly, pruning should be clean and thorough, ensuring that no latent buds are left behind, which could lead to unwanted regrowth.
