Postoperative follow-up of donors in 27 kidney donors for kidney transplantation
Release date: 2008-08-25 This study aimed to evaluate the safety of living donor kidney surgery and assess the quality of life in donors following the procedure. A total of 27 living kidney donors were included in the research, with data collected between December 2001 and September 2005. Of these, six donors underwent traditional open posterior abdominal surgery, while 21 received retroperitoneal laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. All 27 donors were followed up for a period ranging from 14 to 60 months. To evaluate the impact of the surgery on the donors’ health, we monitored changes in key biochemical markers such as serum creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood glucose, and blood pressure before and after the operation. Additionally, we used the SF-36 health survey and a 25-item questionnaire to measure the overall quality of life among the donors. The surgical procedures were successfully completed in all 27 cases. There were no complications reported in the laparoscopic group. The average operation time ranged from 60 to 180 minutes, with blood loss between 20 and 200 ml, and postoperative hospital stays lasting 3 to 7 days. While some short-term changes in laboratory values were observed, they did not reach statistical significance (P > 0.05). The SF-36 scores indicated that the donors maintained a satisfactory quality of life after the surgery. In conclusion, this study supports the safety and feasibility of living donor kidney transplantation. Proper preoperative evaluation, meticulous surgical technique, and long-term follow-up are essential to ensure the well-being of donors. These findings provide valuable insights for improving donor care and enhancing the outcomes of living donor kidney transplants.
