Tomatoes are widely loved for their rich nutritional value and the variety of ways they can be enjoyed. Cultivated tomatoes have high yields and provide good economic returns, especially in off-season greenhouse farming, where the profit potential is even greater. There are numerous tomato varieties, but they are mainly categorized into large red and pink types. Imported red tomatoes from Europe and America are known for their firm texture and attractive fruit shape, making them ideal for long-distance transport and meeting export standards. However, they often suffer from small size and less flavorful taste. On the other hand, locally grown powdered tomatoes offer better flavor and larger size, but they tend to be softer, less sturdy, and more prone to diseases.
Recently, a new variety called Longdo, introduced from the United States, has gained attention. It combines the best traits of both imported and local tomatoes—firmness, good fruit shape, strong growth, and a pink color with a desirable texture. This variety is rare and highly promising, making it an excellent candidate for small-scale trials before considering large-scale planting.
**First, characteristics**
Longdo is an early-maturing, indeterminate type tomato with slightly thicker leaves and stronger plant growth. The fruit is very hard, with a shelf life that rivals imported red tomatoes. The fruit shape is outstanding, with uniform size and high quality, making it suitable for both export and supermarket sales. Each fruit typically weighs between 320-350 grams. It also exhibits strong resistance to leaf mold, viral diseases, and root-knot nematodes. Additionally, it is cold and heat-resistant, showing no ridged green shoulders under low temperatures or curled leaves under high temperatures. The plant has a continuous fruit-setting ability, with no empty clusters or early aging. Overall, its performance is significantly better than traditional varieties. It adapts well to different regions and can be planted year-round, including overwintering, late autumn, summer, and early spring.
**Second, cultivation tips**
Due to its vigorous growth, the planting density should not be too high, especially for overwintering crops. It is recommended to plant about 2,200 plants per acre. When planting at a density of 4-6 fruits per plant, around 3,200 plants per mu is appropriate. Flowering should be kept moderate to ensure proper fruit development. During the flower bud differentiation stage (when the seedlings have 3–8 leaves), the night temperature should be maintained at 10°C or higher. For base fertilizer, organic manure combined with potassium and calcium fertilizers is recommended. After planting, the first top dressing should be applied when the first cluster of fruit reaches the size of a walnut, followed by additional top dressings with increased amounts.
