Canna is a herbaceous perennial plant known for its thick rhizomes that grow along the stem. It blooms from June to October, producing large and vibrant flowers, while its foliage remains lush and green throughout the season. Canna is a prized addition to summer gardens, offering both beauty and resilience. It can be planted individually or in clusters, and it has a strong ability to tolerate sulfur dioxide, making it ideal for urban environments.
Canna thrives in sunny and warm conditions, requiring well-drained, fertile soil. During the early growing season, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once a week for about four to five weeks to support healthy growth. After flowering, remove the spent blossoms promptly to encourage new blooms and maintain the plant's appearance. In autumn, it's beneficial to add organic fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium to help the plant prepare for winter.
Once the first frost appears, carefully dig up the rhizomes, cut off the stems and leaves at ground level, and allow them to dry for approximately ten days. Store the rhizomes in dry sand at a temperature between 10°C and 15°C. Check the storage area every other month to ensure proper ventilation and prevent rot.
Propagation of canna is typically done through rhizome division. In late April, after the winter dormancy period, cut the large rhizomes into sections, each containing one or two buds. Plant these sections in well-prepared potting soil, covering them with 4 to 6 cm of soil. Water the plants regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. With proper care, canna will thrive and bring color to your garden year after year.
