Postoperative follow-up of donors in 27 kidney donors for kidney transplantation
Release date: 2008-08-25 This study aimed to evaluate the safety of living donor kidney surgery and its impact on the quality of life of donors. A total of 27 living kidney donors were included in the research, with data collected between December 2001 and September 2005. Of these, six donors underwent traditional open posterior abdominal surgery, while 21 received retroperitoneal laparoscopic procedures. All 27 donors were followed up for a period ranging from 14 to 60 months. To assess the post-surgical outcomes, key laboratory parameters such as serum creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood glucose levels, and blood pressure were compared before and after the operation. Additionally, the SF-36 health survey was used alongside a 25-item questionnaire to measure the overall quality of life among the donors. The results showed that all 27 kidney donations were successfully completed without any major complications. The laparoscopic group had shorter hospital stays, averaging 3 to 7 days, with operation times ranging from 60 to 180 minutes and minimal blood loss (20–200 ml). Although some short-term changes were observed in the donors' health indicators, these differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Despite the minor fluctuations, the overall health scores indicated that the donors maintained a satisfactory quality of life following the procedure. This suggests that living donor kidney transplantation is a safe and viable option when proper preoperative evaluations, meticulous surgical techniques, and long-term follow-ups are implemented.
