Nutritional supplements do not eat in the end

Chen Junshi: A renowned nutrition and food safety expert, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Dr. T. Collin Campbell: A lifelong professor at Cornell University, often referred to as the “Einstein of Nutrition.”

Moderator (He Bo): Professor Chen, we have a live viewer who would like to ask you a question: “Academician Chen, I’ve come across a theory called ‘China’s Scientific Diet’—five grains, five animals, proper amounts, not missing beans, vegetables, and miscellaneous greens, supplemented with fruits. This is said to represent a balanced nutritional structure. If we follow this, will our nutrition be sufficient?”

Chen Junshi: Yes, this is an ancient Chinese saying that has been scientifically validated in recent years. As Professor Campbell mentioned, it emphasizes the importance of including a wide variety of foods—grains, fruits, vegetables, and animal products such as chicken, fish, eggs, and milk. There are countless types of food available today, but the key is to choose a balanced combination. According to what we’re discussing now, we should focus more on plant-based foods, including vegetables, fruits, and legumes, which are essential for a well-rounded diet.

Moderator (He Bo): If one achieves such a balanced diet, do they still need to take nutritional supplements or health products today?

Chen Junshi: In principle, nutritionists always recommend a balanced diet first. As Professor Campbell pointed out, if you have a good mix of vegetables, fruits, and legumes, you can get thousands of nutrients, making your diet complete. Under normal circumstances, there’s no need to rely on supplements or health products. However, it's important to note that people may have different needs. For example, during pregnancy, some individuals might require additional iron, which is a special physiological condition.

In some cases, people may lack certain micronutrients due to specific situations, and in those cases, supplementation could be necessary. But generally, we don’t advocate relying solely on vitamin or mineral supplements to meet nutritional needs. Instead, a diverse and well-balanced diet is the best approach.

Campbell: I’d like to add something about vegetarianism and weakness. Historically, people associated being weak with being vegetarian, mainly because many vegetarians in the past were poor and couldn’t afford meat. Additionally, poor public health conditions in those areas contributed to illness and weakness. But today, things are different. In modern societies, a varied plant-based diet doesn’t lead to nutrient deficiencies—it can be very healthy.

At the same time, I want to mention that in China, there are many studies showing that some nutritional supplements are ineffective or even harmful. While a pill might seem to provide a nutrient, it’s not the same as real nutrition. Our bodies are complex systems, and taking just one element in tablet form isn’t enough. It’s essentially medicine, not a comprehensive solution to nutrition.
