Spring sea cucumber breeding precautions

Most of the sea cucumber farming in the North is open-air breeding of tidal belts and reef-building ponds. Many farmers have the concept of low winter temperatures and the sea cucumbers do not have to be managed, leading to the death of many sea cucumbers. From the understanding of the situation in recent years, the time of large-scale incidence of cultured sea cucumbers is basically the same. Shandong is mostly from mid-February to early May, and is concentrated from March to April.

The important change factor during this period is that temperature and water temperature have gradually recovered from the cold winter cold period, but the recovery rate of temperature and water temperature is different, the temperature rises quickly, the water temperature rises slowly, and there is a hysteresis. When the temperature exceeds the temperature of the water, the upper and lower layers of the water in the breeding pond will form a difference in water temperature, forming a stratification of water temperature. After measurement, the temperature difference at the depth of 1 meter to 3 meters is 1 degree to 2 degrees. The water with high water temperature has low density and small specific gravity. As a result, the upper layer of water is always in the upper layer and cannot be exchanged with the bottom layer of water through upper and lower convection. As a result, the bottom water on which sea cucumbers depend is called “dead water”, resulting in sufficient dissolved oxygen in the upper layer of water. It cannot be transported to the ground floor by the convection of water.

In addition, sea cucumbers consume large amounts of oxygen in the underlying activities, metabolism, and decomposition of organic matter, and they lack timely supplements, resulting in the underlying areas becoming hypoxic or even anaerobic. After testing, the dissolved oxygen in the bottom water during this period was mostly below 3 mg/l. Under hypoxia or anoxic conditions, the metabolic levels of sea cucumbers decline, and the functions of the circulation, nerves, digestion, and respiration systems are hindered, and the ability to resist stress and disease resistance is greatly weakened. At the same time, anaerobic bacteria multiply and become anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, producing toxic substances such as ammonia nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide that are highly toxic, further exacerbating the adverse effects on sea cucumbers. Due to the deterioration of water quality, the sea cucumbers will be weak and various pathogens such as bacteria will invade, causing the occurrence of sea cucumbers.

In order to prevent the occurrence of the above situation, it is necessary to maximally increase the actual exchange of water in the ponds, maximize the amount of fresh water for the ponds when catching the high tide, minimize the temperature difference between day and night, and extend the water flow when the water temperature rises. Time; often patrol the pool, if necessary, send divers to the bottom of the pool to check the activity status of sea cucumber. If individual stichopus are found to be affected, remove them promptly and soak in disinfectant to prevent infection of other healthy sea cucumbers.
