DIY Pallet Beds for shared kids room
If you caught my recent inspiration board for my kids' new room, you already know that the centerpiece is the pallet bed. It's something I've been dreaming of creating for quite some time, and I couldn't believe my luck a month ago when I stumbled across a pile of pallets—yes, for free! While sorting through the pallets to find ones in decent condition, we also discovered a few large pallet boxes. We decided to use those for Aliyah’s bed, adding some height and depth to the project. Of course, we still needed to figure out how to transport them home and turn them into proper beds. Once we got our treasure trove safely into the garage, the real work began. My amazing husband took care of cleaning and sanding the pallets, and within a single afternoon, they were ready to be assembled. We measured the twin-sized mattresses we planned to use and adjusted the width of the two pallets by about a foot. To keep things flexible for future room rearrangements, we kept the pallets separate rather than joining them into one solid unit. We bought eight post finials to serve as feet for the pallet bed, securing them at the four corners to ensure stability. For Aliyah’s pallet box bed, we sanded it down first and then purchased a large piece of plywood from Home Depot. They cut it to fit perfectly over the pallet structure. To add strength, we screwed the plywood securely onto the pallets.
Finally, we topped everything off with the mattresses and bedding. And voilà ! Two beautiful pallet beds were born. Cost breakdown for the beds: We used tools and screws we already owned. Additionally, we sold the kids’ old beds on Craigslist, which covered the cost of Brayden’s new twin mattress, some sheets, pillows, and a few other room essentials. All in all, the total cost was only $48. Surprisingly, the whole process was far simpler than I anticipated. The sanding was the most labor-intensive part, but it was worth every bit of effort.
