How to identify the merits of fry

Because of the influence of fish egg quality and environmental conditions during hatching, fry can vary in strength and vitality, which significantly affects their survival and growth. Farmers can assess the quality of fry by observing their color, swimming behavior, and their ability to respond to external stimuli. The following are the methods for identification: First, observe the body color and overall appearance. High-quality fry should have a uniform, clean body with no white or dead seedlings. When exposed to light, their bodies should appear slightly yellow or slightly red. On the other hand, poor-quality fry may have inconsistent colors, visible white spots, or dirt on their bodies, and their color may appear dull and grayish-black. Second, check the swimming behavior. Place the fry in a container of water and gently stir the water to create a vortex. High-quality fry will actively swim against the current and move toward the edges of the container. In contrast, weak or low-quality fry tend to be swept into the vortex and show little resistance. Third, perform a sample test. Place the fry in a white porcelain basin and slowly pour water into it. If the fry can swim against the flow and remain active, especially when the water is drained, and they struggle in the basin with their heads and tails bent at a noticeable angle, they are considered high-quality. However, if the fry float passively with the water and show only minimal movement, such as head and tail twisting without proper coordination, they are classified as low-quality. These observations help farmers make informed decisions about which fry to keep or discard, ensuring better growth rates and higher survival in their aquaculture systems.
