To enhance the meat quality and increase the production of meat in rabbits, proper fattening before slaughter is essential. A well-fattened rabbit can store over 500 grams of fat within a 30- to 45-day period, which not only improves meat yield but also results in high-quality rabbit skin. The fattening process should begin after weaning, when rabbits start gaining weight naturally. Initially, they can be allowed to graze in open areas to encourage physical activity, supporting healthy growth and development of bones and muscles. After about 15 days, they should be moved to cage systems for more controlled feeding and faster weight gain. Rabbits are typically ready for slaughter when they reach a weight of 2.5 kg.
The feed during the fattening phase should primarily consist of concentrated feeds, with some green materials added for balance. If you're formulating your own feed, it should contain around 15% cellulose, 17% crude protein, and 2.5% fat. Suitable ingredients include corn, barley, soybean meal, bran, sweet potatoes, and potatoes. It's also important to add mineral supplements like bone meal, salt, and charcoal powder to support overall health and growth.
Male rabbits intended for fattening are often castrated between 56 and 70 days of age, as this can significantly improve the efficiency of the fattening process. In the final stages of fattening, it’s best to limit their movement by keeping them in small, enclosed cages or wooden boxes placed in a warm, quiet, and dark environment. This helps promote weight gain and fat accumulation.
Since the rabbits will be less active during this time, their feeding schedule should be adjusted accordingly. They should be fed smaller portions more frequently throughout the day to maintain appetite and ensure adequate nutrient intake. Fresh water must always be available to prevent digestive issues and support proper metabolism.
Proper management is crucial during the fattening period, as reduced activity and limited exposure to light can weaken the rabbits' immune systems, making them more prone to illness. Regular inspections, clean living conditions, and routine disinfection of cages are necessary to maintain good health. Ensuring that the rabbits have access to nutritious food, comfortable rest, and a stress-free environment is key to successful fattening.
