Low winter temperatures create the ideal conditions for planting woody herbs. To improve the survival rate of medicinal seedlings, farmers should pay attention to the following six key points when planting:
1. **Protect Seedlings**: When raising and transporting seedlings, extra care must be taken to protect the fibrous roots. It is best to plant them immediately after lifting. 4. **Prune Before Planting on Slopes**: When planting on steep slopes with limited water, it's advisable to prune the seedlings before planting, especially for broad-leaved species. Pruning reduces water loss and improves the chances of successful establishment.
5. **Prevent Root Damage from Freezing**: On cold hillsides, the soil in tree pits may sink when frozen, causing root damage and seedling death. Before and during freezing weather, compact the soil around the seedlings to prevent this issue.
6. **Handle Seedlings Carefully from the Boggy Soil**:
- **Avoid Dry Seedlings**: Water the area 1–2 days before lifting to ensure the soil is moist and sticky. This makes it easier to lift the seedlings without damaging the roots.
- **Avoid Pulling by Hand**: Using hands to pull seedlings can cause damage to leaves, stems, and fibrous roots. Instead, use proper tools to minimize harm.
- **Use a Mud Ball**: When lifting seedlings, allow some soil to remain attached to the fibrous roots. This helps keep the roots moist and aids in quicker adaptation to the new planting site.
