China has developed a new medical fixed material that can replace gypsum

China has introduced a groundbreaking medical fixation material that can replace traditional gypsum. Developed by the Changchun Yinghua Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this innovative external fixation material features shape memory properties, is fully biodegradable, and exhibits excellent plasticity when exposed to warm water (55-70°C). It is safe, easy to use, clean, non-toxic, and free from side effects, making it a promising alternative to conventional plaster. The material is primarily composed of polylactic acid (PLLA), with optional additions such as poly-γ-caprolactone (PCL), inorganic minerals (like calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, talc, barium sulfate, and montmorillonite), silane coupling agents, and colorants. A copolymer of lactide (LLA) and ε-caprolactone (CL) was successfully used as a solubilizer to blend PLLA and PCL, creating a warm-water-plastic medical fixation material. This product is manufactured into porous sheets or meshes, offering good breathability and water resistance, and it remains durable during use without cracking or breaking. With high mechanical strength and flexibility, the material allows for clear X-ray imaging without requiring removal. Its low bulk density (0.9–1.2 g/cm³) means it’s lightweight and requires less material, typically 1–3 mm thick. When heated in warm water, it becomes malleable for easy handling by medical professionals. Thanks to its shape memory, it can return to its original form when reheated. The material can be stored for long periods and completely biodegrades after use, leaving no environmental impact. Compared to international PCL homopolymers, this blend offers better mechanical performance at a lower cost, with a customizable softening temperature. It can be used without water heating, and secondary molding can be achieved using a hair dryer. The technology behind this material has been patented in China, marking a significant advancement in medical device innovation. Source: China Medical Device Industry Association
