The Prevention of Gray Mold of Camellia (Chaga)
Symptoms: The primary damage caused by this disease occurs on the flowers of camellia. Initially, a water-soaked lesion appears on the petals, which gradually spreads across the entire flower. The infected flowers turn brown to dark brown and eventually rot. A gray, velvety layer of mildew becomes visible as the disease progresses. Disease Characteristics: This disease is caused by the fungus *Sclerotinia fuckeliana*, with its anamorphic stage being *Botrytis cinerea*. The disease is particularly prevalent during greenhouse cultivation in spring or early spring, but it can also occur during cold and humid conditions in autumn and winter. In open-field settings, the disease tends to appear during the rainy season. High humidity and dense flower clusters create favorable conditions for infection, making the plants more vulnerable. Control Methods: (1) Cultural Control: It is recommended to implement rainproof cultivation techniques to reduce moisture exposure. Proper spacing between plants and good air circulation can also help prevent the spread of the disease. (2) Chemical Control: When the greenhouse or open field enters the disease onset period or when early signs are observed, several fungicides can be applied. These include 40% pyrimethanil suspension diluted at 1200 times, 50% chlorothalonil wettable powder diluted at 900 times, 50% pyraclostrobin wettable powder diluted at 1500 times, 50% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder diluted at 1000 times, and 65% sulfur wettable powder diluted at 1000 times. Apply these treatments once every 10 days, repeating the process 2 to 3 times for effective control. In addition to chemical and cultural methods, monitoring the environment and maintaining proper sanitation around the plants can significantly reduce the risk of infection. Early detection and prompt action are key to managing this disease effectively.
