How to feed dairy cows

The amount of brewers' grains fed to cows should be carefully managed. Based on local experience, feeding each cow 7–8 kilograms per day has been shown to significantly improve production performance without causing any adverse effects. For lactating cows, the daily intake should not exceed 10 kg, especially during the summer months when spoilage is more likely. Fresh brewers’ grains contain a high water content and can spoil quickly, so it’s essential to ensure they are fresh and properly stored if not used immediately. During hot weather, it’s best to feed them daily. To help with digestion and maintain rumen health, it is recommended to add 150–200 grams of baking soda per cow daily. It's important to consider the nutritional balance when feeding brewers’ grains. While they are rich in crude protein, they tend to be low in calcium and phosphorus, and their mineral proportions may not be ideal. Therefore, it's advisable to increase the concentration of dietary concentrates and pay special attention to calcium supplementation. Adding bone meal at 2% of the concentrate ration can support both milk production and the overall health of dairy cows. Additionally, cows that have recently given birth and are less than one month postpartum should avoid large amounts of brewers’ grains. This helps prevent worsening of the negative energy balance and supports faster recovery of the reproductive system. In cases of chronic poisoning from brewers’ grains, it is crucial to reduce the feeding amount immediately and provide appropriate symptomatic treatment as soon as possible. Early intervention can prevent serious health complications and ensure the well-being of the herd.
