Bitter water roses can be harvested two to three years after planting and can continue to produce flowers for 20 to 25 years. The flowering period typically lasts around 20 to 30 days, with the optimal collection window being 15 to 20 days. Flower picking should be done early in the morning, preferably before 10:00 a.m., to ensure the highest quality and oil content. Once picked, the flowers must be processed within two hours to maintain freshness and maximize essential oil yield.
The extraction process usually involves water distillation, which is a traditional and effective method for obtaining bitter water rose oil. The distillation process yields approximately 0.04% essential oil by weight. In addition to distillation, petroleum ether extraction is also used, which results in an extract cream rate of about 0.28%. These figures highlight the relatively low yield of the oil, emphasizing the need for careful and timely processing to make the most of each harvest.
