Cultivation Techniques of Summer and Autumn Watermelon

Watermelon cultivation typically begins at the end of May and early June, with harvesting taking place from August to September. During this period, temperatures are high and rainfall is frequent, leading to increased pest activity and making farming more challenging. To ensure high-quality and high-yield watermelons, proper water management is essential. In addition to meeting the crop's water needs during its growth and development, it is also important to maintain good soil aeration. Watering should be done in the early morning or late evening when humidity levels are lower, and drainage must be carefully managed. Besides using raised beds and sorghum as barriers, farmers should also enhance their flood control measures. Especially after summer downpours, timely drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogging and root damage. To protect against rain, female and male flowers can be individually covered with bags. Alternatively, male flowers can be removed before they open, and pollination can be manually facilitated by opening the greenhouse or allowing natural pollinators to enter. If pollination occurs within three hours, it is recommended to provide additional watering to support fruit set and development. These practices help ensure better yields and healthier crops despite the challenging weather conditions.
