Cultivation Techniques of Summer and Autumn Watermelon

Watermelon cultivation typically begins from late May to early June, with harvesting taking place between August and September. During this period, high temperatures and frequent rainfall create a challenging environment for farming. Pest infestations are more severe, making production more difficult. Therefore, it is essential to implement appropriate technical measures to ensure both high quality and high yield. Proper water management is crucial during this time. In addition to meeting the water needs of the watermelon plants, it's important to maintain adequate soil aeration and keep the field well-drained. Watering should be done in the early morning or late evening when humidity is lower to avoid excessive moisture that can lead to diseases. Drainage must be carefully managed, and besides using raised beds and sorghum intercropping, effective rain and flood control measures should also be strengthened. Especially after summer downpours, timely drainage is critical to prevent waterlogging. To protect the female and male flowers from heavy rain, individual bags can be used to cover them. Alternatively, male flowers can be removed before flowering, and pollination can be carried out manually in the field. If pollination occurs within three hours, it is recommended to provide additional protection against rain to ensure successful fertilization and fruit set. These practices help improve the overall success rate of the crop and contribute to better yields.
