On May 12, following the confirmation of an H1N1 flu case in Sichuan, Chongqing initiated isolation observations for 21 close contacts. Just a day earlier, on May 11, Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with the Third Military Medical University in Chongqing, installed an advanced infrared thermal screening system in its outpatient area. This new device, known as an infrared hot-line thermometer, can detect high temperatures in individuals within just 0.1 seconds, enabling rapid and efficient screening.
The innovative technology was developed by Professor Wu Shiming, head of the Pain Department at Xinqiao Hospital. The system is capable of monitoring body temperature from up to 10 meters away, instantly identifying abnormal temperatures and triggering alarms. It also supports automated tracking and recording, ensuring that anyone with elevated body temperature is quickly isolated and directed to a medical facility for further evaluation.
Professor Wu explained that the system uses infrared thermal imaging technology, which captures the heat emitted by the human body and translates it into visual images. This allows for the detection of temperature variations across different parts of the body. Even subtle changes—such as a 0.05-degree Celsius increase—can be accurately detected, making it highly effective in identifying early signs of illness. For instance, symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, or back pain, as well as early-stage tumors, may cause localized temperature shifts that the system can pick up.
The device itself is compact, roughly the size of a digital camera, and comes with a portable monitor that can be easily carried by hand. Its portability and efficiency make it ideal for use in public areas, hospitals, and other high-traffic locations where quick health screenings are essential. With this technology, Chongqing is taking proactive steps to enhance public health safety and respond swiftly to potential outbreaks.
