While plants can often meet their needs through the nutrient content of the soil, micro-fertilizers play a vital role in boosting crop yields and improving product quality. These micronutrients are essential for various physiological processes, including enzyme activation, photosynthesis, and reproductive growth.
Zinc fertilizer is commonly applied as a base fertilizer, seed treatment, or top dressing. Zinc sulfate and zinc chloride are the most widely used forms. For base application, the typical rate is 12 kg per hectare. It should be mixed with acidic fertilizers but not with phosphates, as it does not move easily through the soil.
Boron is typically applied using borax or boric acid, both of which are water-soluble and fast-acting. They can be used as base, seed, or foliar fertilizers. In soils with low boron levels, 1.5 to 3 kg per hectare is recommended. Foliar sprays usually require a concentration of 0.025% to 0.1% boric acid or 0.05% to 0.2% borax solution, applied at 750 to 1125 kg per hectare. Seeds can be soaked in a 0.01% to 0.05% solution for 6 to 12 hours, while transplanting solutions range from 0.1% to 0.2%. For seed coating, 0.4 to 1.0 g/kg of seeds is common. Boron should be evenly distributed to avoid toxicity and can be mixed with nitrogen, phosphorus, or organic fertilizers.
In fruit trees, boron is applied as a base fertilizer at 20–30 g (for young trees) to 100–200 g (for mature trees) of borax per tree. Since boron is not mobile within the plant, multiple applications are necessary to ensure effective uptake.
Manganese fertilizer, such as manganese sulfate, is best suited for neutral or alkaline soils. It tends to become insoluble in such conditions, so foliar application, seed soaking, or seed dressing is preferred. A 0.1% to 0.2% solution is typically used for seed soaking for 8 hours, while seed dressing requires 4–8 g/kg of seeds. Foliar sprays for field crops are generally 0.05% to 0.1%, and for fruit trees, 0.3% to 0.4%. Spraying is done at 750 to 1300 kg/ha, usually once or twice. Seed fertilization is applied at 60 to 120 kg/ha, often combined with acidic fertilizers to reduce fixation.
Copper fertilizer, such as copper sulfate, is used as a base fertilizer, seed treatment, or foliar spray. The base application rate is 15–23 kg/ha, often mixed with acidic fertilizers. For seed dressing, 1 g of copper sulfate per kg of seeds is recommended. Soaking seeds in a 0.01% to 0.05% solution for 24 hours is also effective. Foliar sprays use concentrations of 0.02% to 0.1%, and adding 10–20% slaked lime helps prevent toxicity.
Molybdenum fertilizer, often in the form of ammonium molybdate or sodium molybdate, is used for seed treatment and foliar application. A 0.05% to 0.1% solution is used for seed soaking for 12 hours, and 2–6 g of ammonium molybdate per kg of seeds is recommended for coating. Foliar sprays are typically 0.01% to 0.1%, applied 1–2 times during early growth stages. Molybdenum works well with phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers, especially in legumes like soybeans.
Iron fertilizer, primarily ferrous sulfate, is mostly applied via foliar sprays due to its rapid conversion into insoluble forms in the soil. The typical foliar concentration is 0.75% to 1.0%, and for fruit trees, it is often applied before bud break. Base fertilizers are sometimes combined with decomposable organic materials to help prevent iron deficiency disorders.
